MEAN GUY running

Stop jogging, start playing

Why "Mean Guy Running" is the Cure for Boring Miles

Let’s be honest: standard running can be mind-numbingly dull. Staring at the same pavement, checking your watch every thirty seconds, and wondering if you’ve actually hit your 5k, when you have actually only plodded half a mile. Has time simply frozen? It feels like exercise is a chore, and as adults, we already have enough chores.

MEAN GUY running flips the script by treating your neighborhood like a massive, open-world video game. Remember the obsession of trying to beat your high score on Pac-Man or the rush of finally finding a hidden level in Super Mario? That’s the energy we’re bringing to the streets.
We don't just "go for a run."

We gamify running.

Imagine your GPS route is a literal scoreboard. Every sprint to a landmark, every hidden "checkpoint" you hit adds to your daily tally. You aren't just burning calories; you’re climbing a leaderboard. Every mile is a point. Every run is a point. You run. You log your mileage. You win!

Adulting usually means losing that "play" instinct. By injecting running challenges into your workout, your brain stops focusing on the burning in your lungs and starts focusing on the win: the new shoes you can buy or the race entree you just won.  It’s nostalgic, it’s addictive, and it’s a simple way to make 6:00 AM feel like an adventure instead of a sentence.

Embrace Your Inner "Mean": Why Being an Average Runner is Something to Celebrate

2/11/2026

In the world of running, it’s easy to feel the constant pressure to be faster, stronger, better, or whatever Daft Punk said, and then Kanye used. We scroll through social media, seeing fast finish times, epic mileage logs, and seemingly effortless paces. And for a moment, we might think, "That's what I should be doing. I need to be at the top."

But let's be real for a second.

For most of us, life isn't just about running. It's about juggling a demanding job, raising a family, chauffeuring kids to activities, preparing nutritious meals, and maybe, just maybe, finding a moment for ourselves. In this whirlwind, consistently being "the best" runner often feels like an unattainable dream, another item on an already overflowing to-do list.
And guess what? That's perfectly okay.

The Beauty of the "Mean"
At MEAN GUY running, we believe there’s immense power and joy in being an average runner. In fact, we celebrate it. The "mean" isn't just a mathematical term for us; it's a philosophy. It’s about acknowledging that the vast majority of us fall somewhere in the middle, and that middle is a vibrant, dedicated, and incredibly important part of the running community.

It's easy to get caught up in chasing PRs and podium finishes, but consider what you are achieving:
  • You're a Runner: Simply lacing up and getting out there, day after day, week after week, makes you a runner. That’s a significant accomplishment in itself.
  • You're Prioritizing Health: You’re choosing movement, fresh air (when the weather permits), and mental well-being over countless other temptations.
  • You're Building Consistency: Showing up, even when it’s hard, is the true mark of a dedicated runner, regardless of pace.
  • You're Finding Joy: Whether it’s the quiet solitude of an early morning run or the camaraderie of a group jog, you’re experiencing the pure, unadulterated joy of movement.
Redefining "Success"
Success in running doesn't have to be defined solely by speed or distance. It can be:
  • Showing up when you'd rather stay on the couch.
  • Finishing that challenging run you thought you couldn't do.
  • Feeling happier and more energized after a tough day.
  • Inspiring your kids or friends to move their bodies.
  • Being part of a community that understands the struggle and the triumph.
Be Happy. Be a Runner. Be "Mean."
Instead of fixating on what you aren't, let's embrace what you are. You are a runner. You are dedicated. You are prioritizing your well-being. And you are part of a massive, supportive community that understands the everyday grind.

At MEAN GUY running, we don't just say this; we live it. Our challenges reward not only the top performers but also those who embody the spirit of the "mean"—the average, consistent, resilient runners who make up the heart of our sport.

So, the next time you feel that pang of inadequacy, remember this: You don't have to be the fastest to be a fantastic runner. You just have to be you. And that, my friend, is more than enough.

In hanging out with some running friends last night at the Last Minute Lace Up, they just recently discovered the true meaning behind MEAN GUY running.

You see, I’m not an angry runner. I’m not a disgruntled runner. I’m an average runner.  You know, average. The mean. Similar to the median. The middle of the road. That’s me. And that what MEAN GUY running is all about!

Not many people can run sub six/seven/eight minute miles for races. I embraced my average running ability and try to share the love as best I can!

The running challenges reflect this!. Not only do the top runners win $50/$75 gift cards to a running store of their choice, the average (sometimes median) runner does too!  You read that right. Two winners, up to $150 each challenge is on the table.

Each running challenge uses milage, number of runs, and other fun (to me) math to help all runners stay motivated no matter what the running conditions. Runners simply log mileage through the website and MGr does the rest. Here is a link to the current challenge.

The next challenge, Strikeout, will begin mid-August. For this challenge, if you miss three days in a row of running, you’re out. The top runner and average runner left still in at the end will win! Stay tuned if interested for Strikeout!

Day 187

Who isn’t busy?

“How have you’ve been?”

“Busy.”

This year I chose to become very busy.

In January, I decided to start streak through the month and run every day. It was the annual MEAN GUY running Beat the Streak running challenge. Once I had successfully completed the month, a friend and MGr member mentioned he planned to streak through the entire year.

With my full time job, wife and two kids, final semester of completing graduate school, and operating MEAN GUY running, I decided I would do the same. I would run (at least one mile) every day in 2017.

Instead of finding the time to run, I made the time to run. It became part of my day. I woke up 45 minutes earlier than usual. I went to bed a half hour later than planned. I stayed at work an extra 20 minutes to run on the treadmill. Whatever it took, and now takes, it happens.

Fortunately, I have been relatively healthy the first 187 days of my streak. (If you do the math, today, July 5th is the 186th day of the year, but I actually started on December 31st). I have had a few head colds and achy body parts, but nothing that has screamed not to run.

Instead of finding time, make the time. I am in no way saying run every day for a year like stupid me. But no more excuses. I made them for too long.
Although I have been in charge of (whatever that means) a running club/group for almost seven years, I have been a very MEAN (average) runner. I still am. I am happy to be in the middle of the pack. It’s boring up front alone!

I have run more miles this year already than any other full year since I started running in 2010. Make the commitment. Keep it. Running challenges are a great way to stay motivated and be held responsible! Check them out here.
